WSG what does it mean!? has been around since my days in santa cruz...or at least just after.
It's shown in SF, NYC, Chicago & now is set to be available for auction tomorrow night at Cue Art Foundation in Chelsea.
The proceeds benefit the Groundswell Community Mural group which I help out with the last two summers. Should be fun and interesting to see if anyone can stand to have Greasy Grucci Grinning from their wall even for a good cause!?

I got to help out for one fun day (a day off the summer DOT mural) with the talented Mark Dean Veca on a new mural he was putting up in the public school at the base of the new Frank Gehry Building in downtown NYC. The buildings funny because you can't miss it from anywhere except standing at it's base. The base of it looks like the brick buildings surrounding it, but then you look up 4 or 5 stories and you can tell that on top and set back from the base is this giant super shiny skyscraper. The mural I was working on was going up in the cafeteria of the new school at the base of the skyscraper. It was a fun project to work on and an honor to get to work with Justin and Mark (Thanks to Viktor Kerlow for the heads-up). I walked by recently and you can see it finished through the windows from the Pace University side of the tower. Pictures are of the mural in process.

Church Ave. Mural

I worked on this mural in Kensington Brooklyn with an amazing group of youth artist from Queens and Brooklyn. I was the assistant artist. The mural is a compilation of designs the youth came up with and presented to the NYCDOT on traffic safety. It turned out pretty nice and the neighborhood was a fun place to work for the summer.

I finished this commission earlier in the summer, but luckily I've been working enough that I haven't had time to post it. Some of the idea or inspiration was from 1950's Golden Books and their tree styles, mixed with a stylized/realistic recognizable faces. The biggest challenge was working with different references of each person and then combining them into a scene and reorienting them within this new environment. Also, it's a small painting, maybe 14x18"? or something like that. The rest of the summer I was working about 60feet x 160 feet, so it's a shift.

That clown head is hand painted perfection. The picture is lucky timing, but coney island just holds that magic for me. I ended up talking to the sign owner, who happened to be passing out flyers for his parking lot and may be blessed with a sign painting job if all stars align.

Village Voice Restaurant Review Comic

I was lucky enough to get this short 9 panel comic assignment from the Village Voice recently. This was the first time I've done a comic using a script that someone else wrote. In this case, the script is a restaurant review. I think this may also be my first color comic. I tweaked the saturation up for the newsprint version so hopefully that will turn out well.
The issue of the paper that the comic appears in is coinciding with the MoCCA comics festival in NYC and the paper for that week is going to be all comics and illustration so it should be a fun one to see. I hope my comic contributes to a memorable issue. Thanks to John at the Voice for a fun assignment. I also just noticed that the website has a pretty nice slide show of the comic (panel by panel) and uses it in a couple spots on the home page this week. Check it out while it's still up Here.

Fundar Square 1

I did this for the upcoming Rabid Rabbit/ C'est bon Kultur collaboration comic anthology. I had one page and it had to be in the "Square one" theme, using the layout of the first panel. I go back and forth on what I think of this, but I at least enjoy certain panels. Excited to see the results that everyone comes up with when it premiers at MoCCa this year.

Disney Water Copy, Hill Billy Mine.

I know everyone loves to hate on Disney and I've done my share, but they have done some beautiful work. So when my son got a "Disney's" fairy tales book I had mixed emotions. Luckily, it's old illustrations for the majority, ranging from the 30's to 60's with some stuff from the 90's. Anyways, I really like some of the artwork and I'm always trying to find well done water to learn from, so I was happy to find some great water to copy in a Gingerbread man story with a Wolf in the water. So what I made is my version of their water with my own character in place of the wolf. I'm not crazy about the character as he was an experimental mix of mediums, but I like the water. The real test will be if I can make my own scene and still make it look good!

I've made it available on shirts (for some reason the blue sky doesn't show up, not sure if that will go for the printed shirt as well?), mugs and the infamous mesh hat.

Community Mural Time

Previous to going to London to work on murals, I got to go to Bed-stuy and help some friends at Groundswell community Mural project paint a mural on the Black Veterans for Social Justice Headquarters on Willoughby Ave. I got to paint a few faces that had already been sketched in. London Calling

I just got back from London a few days ago. I was there with colossal media mates working on 3 large murals at a big mall on the west side of London in the Kensington/ Chelsea section of town. I cleaned the brushes of the guys in the video and cleaned off those big scissor lifts mostly, but I did get a chance to check out central London, the Tate and the British Museum as well as some other good bits of London besides the god-for-saken mall. The Rick Astley sums up the overall feel nicely; look at those outfits and dance moves; those are British.

There are only 3 copies IN THE WHOLE WORLD!
AND NO ONE knows where those 3 copies are exactly, what we do know is that they should be somewhere between NYC and Leipzeig Germany, ....somewhere. Why ?
Because they're headed to the reading area at Reprodukt at the Hambourg comic festival this fall via american Ex-pat comik creator James Turek.
I only made 3 copies and I went ahead and sent them all to germany, so if they do make it to Germany I hope all 3 copies are at least touched by German comix enthusiast at least once, with at least 1 finger. So the total hope tally is 3 german (technically they can be any non-american) finger touches for those extremely extremely rare Chief Executive comiks.

Boston Murals

So last week I was in Boston for a week painting murals for Liquor and Sandwhich Spreads.
We did 2 murals, I'll talk about the bigger one here. We did this one on Tremont and Stuart which is between the Theatre District and Chinatown from what I could tell. It was a funny area,

As for the mural, it was the most I've got to work on the painting aspect since I've been doing the commercial sign painting gig. I got to do the guy in armor, alot of the lady and gentleman, the ballet guy, the handstand guy and other pieces and parts pf the rest of the mural. Most of the lettering and coloring was handled by much much more experienced coworker, but I think it came out pretty good. Unfortunately, the sun was a bit strong when I took the pictures and you see more surface texture than the mural, but you can get the idea.

Anyone who has ever been in the candy aisle with me deciding on a candy bar knows I don't make decisions quickly or painlessly. Today I'm trying to decide some BIG things and it's making my brain spin. Some people go on a walk or garden to clear their mind and relax, I prefer to make burritos. This accomplishes several things: Saves me $$$. Provides maximum deliciousness for minimum $$$ for lunch at work or other meals and saves time cooking later. Gives me the Maximum Burrito, handcrafted lovingly by me....I know what I want and know how to make it and no one can limit the ingredient freestyling that may happen if so moved!
All of the above please me, but I believe some of the magic happens when the music is just right for the mood of the cooking session (Percy Sledge was involved today- Sexy Soul crushing Burrito). Sometimes everything comes together and there is perfect , I almost hate to use it....SYNERGY during the burrito session!
This was an 11 burrito session (one burrito was already in me by the time I took the photo, also notice the extra fixins' which we're summarily eaten as well). Mucho Beuno!
As for my decision? I still haven't decided, but at least I won't go hungry.

I could list all the variables that have been at work in the past month, but I'll concentrate on this new gig I've got. It's interesting; painting murals (mostly billboard advertisements for video games, fashion, liquor, and other crap) on walls, but it's keeping me busy and isn't as glorious as it might sound, but a man's gotta work and a guy's gotta maximize his earnings see.

Ugly Americans sneak peek

The upcoming (March 2010) Comedy Central Cartoon Ugly Americans that I did storyboard work for has released a sneak peak clip of the show. I'm curious to see what the specific episodes I worked on will look like and what will have made it through the many levels of editing. Either way, working at Augenblick Studios and with Devin Clark (the creator) was a great experience and I hope the show does well.

St. John's Kerpoof! Illustrators and Animators Show

I'll be in a show of young illustrators and animators at St.John's University (the one Run DMC went to) which opens tomorrow night (Tuesday December 1), it's called Kerpoof! and it's got a lot of great people in it; including fellow SVA alums Mu Pan, Nathan Fox, Paul Hoppe, and Yuko Shimizu. The show should be interesting as it examines the process of creating the final art and includes sketches and other parts of the process that you normally don't get to see. Directions are HERE if you're in NYC. It should be interesting and a rare chance to see the artist's processes.

I'm pretty traditional with my work process but while working on Ugly Americans I got to use the Cintiq 21 Tablet and it spoiled me. We worked on Flash there , but I wanted to try some Illustrator inking on an olde fashioned Wacom Tablet. Still fun, but man those expensive tablets are nice! The problem is, I'm afraid if I could get one, I might forget my love of paint and paper and "stuff". Anyways, Luckily, I can't afford one right now, so it's not a problem!

For me, he's a living legend and master that spills forth years of learned wisdom. This video just shows him drawing, but somehow it still oozes greatness. Simple and pure.

Continuing Hurricane Pt.4

...So before all this happened and keeping with the things coming back to you, I was contacted by Augenblick Studios about doing some storyboard work for a new show they're working on for Comedy Central called Ugly Americans. Read about it here.
I've been there 2 weeks now, but I can't show you anything that I've worked on, but I can say that it looks like it should be hilarious and the other artist working there are doing some amazing work so the show should prove to be extremely, extremely visually pleasing!!
The look is somewhere in the realm of a EC comics/Daniel Clowes/Superjail??/Futurama/ something something something or at least the animatics I've been watching are. Either way, I'm drawing my ass off everyday and will update when I know anything worth knowing that's useful to anyone. One fun fact I was happy to hear was one of my favorite voices so far is done by someone named Randy Pearlstein, who I found out wrote the script for Cabin Boy! Cabin Boy!

So, As all the previously mentioned stuff was going on, I was also contacted by Ethan at Volcom about putting something in their 2nd Volcomics Issue. I sent him the extended version of the Local Horror comic that I've posted on here and have been close to continuing in other venues a few times. Just when you start to forget something comes back for you and this seems like a perfect place for a surf comic AND the first issue included a sick comic by my all time favorite Sk8 artist the legendary Jim Phillips Jim did the great cover seen here. I'm not sure if he'll be in the 2nd issue, but let's hope so.
I'll post again when the comics hit the streets.

So. More happened right as I was watching the world shift around me. I was contacted by the editor of Fray magazine about doing an illustration for their Love and Death issue. He gave me the option of sending something already made , but yet to be seen in print, so I sent him about 5 or 6 options. He choose a great one. thanks Derek. I believe the issue should be on newstands in the next month or so?, but I'll try to let you know.
An aside to all this is I saw a real life version of this women above in this great video about an old brookln street artist (I know nothing about this one, so excuse me if I mess the details) yesterday. Art imitates life again and with timing.

Hurricane

Man! When it rains it pours. So many things have happened in the past 3 weeks. As Hurricane Bill made his way up the eastern seaboard a baby made it's way out into the world. My Baby! Previous to this I had begun a cover illustration job about a road rally race in the SouthWest for the Santa Fe Reporter that I had mentioned to the editor might be cut short. She was OK with the possibility and suggested I just do 2 spots and she'd color them if it came down to it. So I finished the girl, who she kept having to tell me to make more curvy (oh political correctness! or whatever the hell makes me water things down) and then the baby showed up. So I did the racers late, late at nite in a new baby delirium and she colored it (the art director that is). These here are the quick coloring jobs I did late nite. Anyways, thanks to Angela for the job. And thanks to Hurricane Bill for setting everything into motion.

I've been looking at lots of cartoonist and illustrators from the 40's and 50's lately and much of the old inking is done with nib pens which seem to give a certain line variation that you don't see as much anymore. So I've been playing around with some different nibs the past couple days in my free time. The results vary and they're definitely more sensitive and testy, but I think I'm getting a little better?

Fundar continues! To be clear,
I'm attempting a loose, quick, ridiculous, continuing 4 panel strip that I don't over work and can try some crap out. I suppose it's goal is to amuse me and hopefully others.
The challenge seems to be keeping the balance between story, absurdity, and keeping the interest level up while not overthinking or overworking everything and making something that's funny, but not "Nudge, nudge, wink wink" funny.
Maybe I'll post them all in a row when I get a couple more done to see if they work together at all.

Drawing the Corpse Exquisite

A group of my co-worker's in the storyboard/illustration factory have been passing around some Exquisite Corpse drawings to work on in our free time. A few of the people started it and went wild and others of us have since joined in. It seems to be pretty loose, but you're basically starting with only the end's of the other person's drawings on one edge of your blank section and you don't look and see what the lines are connected to so you're totally guessing and it makes it more fun to see the results. Here's two I worked on. I did the bottom 1/3 on both. Alright, I'm gonna rant a little here, be warned. The important thing is David lynch has this great looking new interview project. Here's what I love about it and here's where the soapbox is stepped upon: They're interviewing REAL people ACROSS the country Not just the Stupid Big coastal cities! And not in a "Look how stupid these people are way! Let's all feel better about our smug selves!" reality show way. It looks like these are people that were reluctant to be filmed; i.e. they're not hungry to show off and be a B,C,D,E,F-list celebrity. I did this comic quickly to get into the free paper that the new Brooklyn Comic Shop Desert Island is putting out. I was too late, maybe it'll be in the next version?
So, I have to show somebody and that's where you come in. I had a lot of fun doing this, so perhaps there'll be more in the coming moons.

I got a text today asking if this animated tiger was my voice. It is, but I had no idea it was out in the world (we filmed the interview footage maybe a year ago?)
So it was cool to see it up on the US air guitar site with a post for the NYC regional air guitar finals tonite. I wish a longer version of the interview made it out somewhere, because the whole thing was pretty funny and William Ocean (the AirGuitar Champ) was pretty fun to work with. Anyways, I didn't do any of the drawing, but I am the tiger and that should count for something!

Newcity Summerguide Cover

I just finished the cover for the Newcity (chicago weekly paper) Summerguide. It's out today in Chicago, so if you're there check it out, it's free. I'm always excited to see how things look once they're printed out on newsprint, I tried to pump up the saturation to account for the newsprint, so we'll see. This was a dream job to do a giant chicago style hotdog and do all the lettering for the cover. I was also excited to see the image on their website and banner. Thanks to the people at Newcity for giving me such a dream assignment!

So I found out yesterday I got 4 pieces from an animation I did in 2008 into the upcoming American Illustration 28 book and one piece into the Chosen (web) category! It seems the plight of an older lady with a rebellious in-grown hair is just the type of subject matter I do best with. And Horror movie character's pensive sides I do second on. Who Knew.

This isn't any crazy experimental thing as far as the genre of comics goes, but personally messing around with the juxtapositionin' of the words and the image and the word bubbles. It's one of my favorite things about comics. I'm not totally amazed with this 4 panel experiment, but it was fun to do and when you stop having fun then well HELL! you might as well go into Banking. (apologies to people who have fun Banking, in fact, I like a little Banking myself!...balancing the books and so forth! the books..

I just finished my new Rabbid Rabbit Cat themed Comic. I'm not gonna post the whole comic, because it's not out for awhile and I harbor hope that people will prefer the paper version with all the other great artist included. I've seen one other piece and the cover and both are old Paper, Rock, Scissors alumni and both pieces are awesome. So that makes it 100% Awesome so far. I'm working on a 2 page comic for the new Rabid Rabbit Comic compilation. The theme is roughly Cat themed. As I've been coming up with my comic, I was reminded of the first time I saw the cover of the "Kat" album "Worship me or Die!" .
I was probably in about 8th grade or so...13-14 years old. There were 2 things in the album cover that set my imagination on fire: Metal/Thrash, etc. and tough, dangerous, women. This album cover combined them both in mind blowing extremes! I came across this video when I was searching for the album cover...

"I Saw You" Reviews and Signing

So I'm happy to report that the "I Saw you: ...missed connections" book that I'm one of 80? comic artist in has been getting some decent reviews lately, it even got reviewed by the NY times!

Return from Panama

So, I just got back from Panama and went directly to Jury Duty. People complain about Jury Duty, but just visiting 100 centre st. in Manhattan and going into the time warp of that building and it's classic NY character's is like a visit to Crime Noir Old New York Disneyland or something. Panama wasn't bad either. I'm always impressed with all the paintings! Here's an underwhelming sampling, including La Vaca pensive and Garfield Tostado en el parque de los perros! (pardon the bad spanish) I'll share some sketchbook journal work eventually as well.

Some good news to begin 2009!
A comic I did 2 years ago for a compilation,
"I Saw You: Missed Connection Comics" is being published by Three Rivers Press, a division of Random House and should be out this February. The idea was a fun one, with people taking inspiration from "missed connection" classifieds and making up a comic based on that idea.
Also,
I found out the other day, I got my Rebel Skin illustration into Illustration West 47 which I'll update on as I find out when the exhibition and book come out. THanks to Daniel Lim for encouraging me to enter.

And,
Congratulations are due to my friend J.T. Yost (who encouraged me to contribute to the Missed Connections compilation!-thanx dude) who just got word that his comic "Old Man Winter" has received a Xeric Grant to fund publication of said comic!

Landon Complete

Landon is done and at his new home The Diamond in Greenpoint(he's living in the basement until he can be put up). Here's a few photo's of the almost finished, which looks more painterly, and the finished Landon, and Landon on the streets in Queens. I can't get over how nice it was to paint big again. Thanks to Dave and Alex for commissioning Landon. I'll put something up when he makes it out onto the wall's of the bar.

I love the 14D bus. It's one of my favorite places to listen to other
people talk, some of my favorite overheard and involved in conversations happen waiting for or on the bus. It gives me hope that there's people still in Manhattan other than the douche bag cookie cutter yuppies and their trend following hipster sheep peers. This said, I've only lived here 8 years and am from the suburbs of D.C. (I'm guilty!), but point being, I'm a lover of the classics and probably a bit of a romantic revisionist when it comes to the "old days", but Hell, whatever happened to a REAL culture done for something other than MOney...OK, OK, OK, I'm hoping there's lots of exceptions and I'm just bitter that NIKE never wanted to buy me 20 acres at a surf spot in central america for my work, but ,
BUT
I rode the bus this morning with this guy that I wanted to wrap up and save because I'm afraid he was the last one I'll ever see or get to interact with in his natural environment. It was wonderful, strange, and a little sad to think that this freakin' 84 yr old guy riding the bus and blabbin' about the O.T.B. on Delancey (crossing himself at every church we passed) and Octagon soap in Chinatown (4 boxes for a dollar) waving his hand off at me while saying "f'a get about it.. are you kidden me..." (and not in an "I'm imitating this" way) was so rare. I know plenty of classic old Peurto Rican and Dominican guys in my neighborhood and the same goes for Jewish ladies and gentleman, but this guy!! Lord have mercy, I watched him in the window of the bus as it pulled away and thought, "There he goes, the last of the old New York in Manhattan I may ever get to share a bus ride with."

Landon Mural

Michael Landon's head is coming alive. I cut the head shape out of MDF board, backed it with some framing, put a "french cleat" piece on the bottom, filled in the counter sunk screw holes with wood putty, gessoed, sanded the whole thing, sketched the basics on with pencil, reverse Osmosisized the transition brackets, registered the coordinates with Local 318 and last nite began the underpainting. I forgot how much I love painting big and ended up doing lots of coordinated dance moves as I dance jam painted the hell out of Landons head complete with dive rolls around the studio floor. Looking at the painting I may have let my beret and the smoking, naked, wine drinking bohemian bon vivants go too wild and will have to reign in the dancing kicks and spins and opt for more pensive naked lounging between brush strokes.

The Comic I began for the Horror of Rabid Rabbit #9 that I just mentioned is currently being continued and supposedly headed for a 2 month trial run on surf website Wetsand.com

I just finished this illustration for the NYPress and the Gut Instinct section again.
It's a story about Diet Coke lovers, the illustration is of a local Athens, Ohio character who wandered the streets cradling a 2 liter bottle of Diet Coke. The whole background story of the guy is good, but I'm too tired to write a worthy summary. Pick up this weeks issue (out thursday?) and check it out for yourself!
